It may be the deep mid-winter, but December can be a surprisingly good month to be outdoors in the Peak District, and not just because of those occasional bright and crispy days. It’s also a good month to see some pretty spectacular cloud inversions, which form in the valleys when cold temperatures and high pressure combine. Inversions are best viewed from on high, so good vantage points include any of Gritstone ridges: Mam Tor, Kinder Scout (pictured), Stanage Edge and Baslow Edge, where you can find yourself – literally – walking above the clouds!
