The most spectacular viewpoints in the Peak District are often achieved with not a lot of effort. The classic skyline walk along the Great Ridge can be started by climbing just 10 minutes from the car park at the base of the Mam Tor "shivering mountain" . From there the path is a gentle up and down paved walkway, with an eagle's-eye vista on both sides of the Ridge as you head towards the summit of Lose Hill. We see walkers of all ages and abilities here, from retirees to families with babies in kiddie carriers or toddlers trotting happily along. We also see a higher proportion of teens and twenties here too, perhaps because this is an absolutely classic walk and totally suited to a quick social media post. Refreshments are easily obtained at the pretty villages of Hope, Edale and Castleton which are helpfully placed in the valleys either side of the Ridge making it possible to divert for snacks or build in start, middle or end stops to create a perfect half-day's outing.
