If you visit the Peak District National Park during Spring and early Summer don’t miss the annual traditional well-dressing festivals, where village wells are adorned with colourful pictures made by pressing leaves, petals and seeds into wet clay tablets. It is believed to originate from the ancient Pagan custom of making sacrifice to the gods of wells and springs. Ashford-in-the-Water, has six wells dotted around the village. Each year all the villages co-ordinate dates to ensure the unveiling of their well dressings don’t clash.
